The following steps are recommended in the process...


ESTABLISH RELATIONSHIPx

In this step, we seek to understand the goals of the company, of the individual engaging the coach as well as the environment and other's perceptions of strengths and challenges.  This typically is accomplished through interviews with human resources, the client's manager and the client to define successful outcomes.  The objective of this step is to precisely identify the nature of the performance issue or developmental objective.

For this step, we recommend the Myers-Brigs Type Indicator (MBTI) to gain additional insight into style preferences.

DEVELOP THE PLANx

Next, we will define coaching objectives/plan.  The coach meets with the client to review the feedback and develop a coaching plan, including objectives for the coaching relationship.  As appropriate, the client's manager will be involved in defining the scope/agenda of the coaching partnership.  The following issues are discussed...

WORK THE PLANx

The coach works with the client to achieve coaching objectives.  Along the way, the coach provides the client with feedback regarding their progress on development objectives.

Final Step: Review the Plan and Process

REVIEW THE PLAN AND PROCESSx

At various milestones — and at the conclusion of the specified time frame — the coach and the client assess the progress that has been achieved towards developmental objectives.  One of the decisions that is made is whether to continue the coaching relationship or to identify other developmental activities that will be more beneficial to the client.  Assessment can take the form of a company review, a formal, third-party assessment or a survey of team members.
